Charisma and talent just grease the hinges of the door that money takes to open. Sometimes I hate capitalism.

History

Singing like a maniac aside, I had no musical experience until I was a squeaky, immature annoyance known as the Seventh Grader. Mister Rauch at West Jordan Middle School cracked open the musical egg, and I’ve never been the same since.

Years later, I participated heavily throughout high school in the West Jordan High School choir program in Take Ten, Concert Choir, Madrigals, and a one-time solo class known as “fifth period”. The final year there, Kelly D, my dear Madrigals, and I created some spectacular music and memories that will permanently be branded in my soul and my ego: I’ll never believe that any other high school choir before or after is better than we were (even if they are– which is hard to accomplish… hey, I’m just stating the truth).

Real Music

Real music is the lifeblood of existence. None of the mass-produced garbage that’s popular today can really be considered ‘music’ if the preceding sentence is true (and it is).

I consider the following some of the most real music in existence, though I also enjoy some of the more modern-sounding stuff, too– few, but some. My very favorite composer, hands down, is Eric Whitacre, but there is plenty out there that is incredibly beautiful, only a portion of which I had the privilege to sing in high school. I seem to gravitate towards most anything new age, a capella, piano, and symphonic. I’ve also always been obsessed with organs and organ music as well as bell towers and music involving bells. I have several favorite hymns, too. A general idea of the music I very greatly love can be seen by browsing my Last.fm loved tracks list (updated sporadically), my Last.fm currently listening list, or by just reading this blog.

Talents

I wouldn’t say I’m the most musically inclined individual I’ve met– up until a few weeks ago I could only sing and sight-read one line, though I am now currently taking piano lessons from a dear friend and can finally play chords instead of just individual notes.

There’s a rumor going around that I once sang in the Assembly Hall in Temple Square one lovely winter night while twinkle lights glowed and my voice sounded as Josh Groban’s does. Unfortunately, I cannot verify this rumor; while it is true that I did sing in the Assembly Hall in Temple Square one lovely winter night while twinkle lights glowed, I didn’t necessarily listen to myself very closely, which is a bad habit one should never get into. Personal speculation aside, the breath was hugged out of me by various women who were momentarily twitterpated after the performance, so perhaps there’s some truth to this.

Even though I’m more of an average person when it comes to music talent (so I think), I feel I am endowed with an ear to be able to segregate the wheat from the tares, as it were: to discern between true beauty in music and your dime-a-dozen contemporaries. Not that all contemporary music is garbage and all classical music is incredible.
